Exempt Organizations Tax Attorney

Cheshire Law Group is hiring an experienced Nonprofit Tax Law Attorney – either full-time or part-time status depending on candidate availabilityNo existing book of business is required. Cheshire Law Group is a woman-owned law firm that exclusively represents nonprofit organizations as outside general counsel. Attorneys on the Firm’s legal team work with nonprofit organizations to become trusted advisors and to provide expert counsel on a wide variety of legal matters. Please note that this position offers flexibility and work may be performed in-person (Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia), remotely, or with a hybrid arrangement.

This position is ideal for an exceptional attorney who has at least three (3) years of experience working in private practice (either in a law firm or accounting firm) on tax matters for nonprofit organizations, or who has more general tax law knowledge and, having had experience with nonprofit tax matters, is interested in focusing exclusively on providing legal advice for tax-exempt organizations.

The optimal candidate for this role is someone who is passionate about representing nonprofit organizations and who enjoys working independently to manage client matters, but who also appreciates collaboration with colleagues. See below for ideal candidate qualities.


Responsibilities

Provide legal assistance and support nonprofit organization clients:

  • Review, draft, revise, and finalize a wide variety of documents including contracts, grant agreements, policies, leases, registrations, resolutions, tax, and corporate forms

  • Research tax and other federal, state, and local laws such as lobbying, charitable solicitation, and governance matters

  • Organize and carefully review documents in preparation for mergers and other repositioning matters

  • Draft memoranda to document findings

  • Translate complex legal issues into understandable concepts using charts or visual aids

Client Management

  • Support and/or manage projects and execute required work with little or no supervision

  • Communicate directly with clients and manage client expectations

  • Monitor legal and compliance issues and client news/events, keeping up with industry trends

  • Work collaboratively with the Firm’s team and with outside counsel as needed

Requirements

  • JD degree required; Must be in good standing

  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant law experience

  • Nonprofit law and/or corporate law – transactional experience a must

  • Licensed to practice in PA mandatory, with additional NJ license preferred and other state licenses (e.g., NY, MD, DE, OH) a plus

  • Excellent written and oral communications, research, editing, analytical, and negotiating skills; strong attention to detail

  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit organizations, board service, and/or working with underserved clients or communities

  • Comfortable with diversity
